Is Your Body Trying to Tell You Something? Learn How Your Skin Reveals Key Details About Your Overall Health
Have you ever come across bizarre changes in your body that you have no explanation for? From dry skin to acne to unusual hair growth, some issues just don’t let up, no matter how hard you try to fix them.
In case you didn’t already know, your skin is the largest organ in your body. Therefore, more often than not, changes in your skin, hair, or nails can come about due to issues below the surface. According to Dr. Jillian MacDonald, a leading dermatologist at The Ottawa Clinic, your problematic skin should be easily fixed through an altered beauty regimen. However, if the issue prolongs, it could be a tell-tale sign of an undiagnosed medical condition.
Here’s what different skin conditions reveal about your health:
1. Itchy, Dry Skin
Normally, your moisturizer should be able to keep this issue at bay. In cases that it fails to do so, you could possibly be suffering from a chronic inflammatory skin condition called Eczema, which causes itchy, dry, cracked, and inflamed skin. If you’ve been experiencing these symptoms for a while now, it’s best that you consult a doctor immediately.
2. Jawline and Chin Breakouts
Are you experiencing unusual pimples growth in the chin and jawline area? Some adult women, who never had acne problems as teenagers, usually complain about this problem. Prolonged acne in this area is often a sign of hormonal imbalance. Try not to worry, as it will just escalate the problem. Hormonal acne tends to get worse with stress and is most commonly experienced during menopause or periods.
3. Sun Spots
Dark spots and freckles result from the sun damage that your skin has had to endure over the years. Mostly, the maximum amount of sun damage in a person’s life occurs from childhood to teenage years, after which a majority of the time is spent indoors. The sun damage you experienced in your earlier years can still increase the risk of having skin cancer. Monitor the changes in your skin, like sores, moles, and raised lesions that won’t heal.
4. Cuts That Won’t Heal
Cuts or wounds that take an unusually long time to heal, or don’t heal at all, could be a sign of several issues. Slow wound healing exists due to a skin infection, skin cancer, diabetes, or blood-clotting disorder. Be sure to consult with a doctor immediately if you’re experiencing this issue.
5. Increased Sweating
An increase in sweating, warm skin, facial flushing, and redness of the palms, accompanied by spooning, thinning hair, hair loss, or concavity of the nails, are the surface symptoms of an overactive thyroid. Some people also experience bulging in their eyes or their eyelids to pull back, medically termed as the “thyroid stare”.
The Bottom Line
If you’re experiencing any unusualities in your skin, it is best to consult your doctor immediately, before the issue escalates. It is best to nip the problem in the bud, rather than having to deal with severe consequences afterward.
