How to Get Rid of Pesky Cough After an Episode of Cold or Flu
Cold and flu are both annoying ailments that leave you tired and drained out. They come with many symptoms like flu, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, sore throats, and coughs. If your flu is a little severe, you might even be tempted to call for a day off to rest.
The good news is that contracting a common cold or flu will help keep your immune system on high alert. It will also mostly subside itself within 8 to 10 days. Unfortunately, though, the cough sticks around for a little longer. Research suggests that a victim of cold or flu could complain of coughing streaks even after 18 days.
This is because the body is still trying to remove the blockage in the air channels and get them back to functioning at an optimum level. The intake of postnasal drips can also be a cause behind it. However, if your cough does not subside within two months, get in touch with a doctor. This may signal other medical conditions like asthma, gastric reflux, or allergies.
Below are a few steps you should take to ward off these coughing spells and give your air channels and throat a break from having to cough constantly.
Be Vigilant About Your Health
The first step to avoiding coughs should be to take measures to avoid contracting flu or cold. If you do not get ill in the first place, you will not experience its lingering symptoms. Maintain good hygiene and wash your hands well before eating. At the first sign of falling defense against seasonal flu, intake zinc or elderberry because these are the first line of defense against cold and may mollify its severity.
Surround Yourself with Good Air
The bone of the irritants for cough is bad air. Polluted air with lots of dust and chemicals can trigger a coughing streak. Similarly, avoid inhaling things you are allergic to you for example strong scents, specific flowers, or even hookah or cigar.
This advice might be old, but it is very effective. Honey sweetened tea can soothe an irritated throat and relieve sinusitis. It can also help flush out the mucus build up in the throat and chest. Honey taken orally on its own could also help since it has antibacterial properties that can assist in fighting off the infection.
Take Some Facial Steam
The act of breathing in hot air can assist in melting the clogged mucus. It will also relieve headaches and flu-like symptoms. It can clear your nasal passage the very same way that saline drop does but, it is more of a long-term solution than nasal drops, which provide only a temporary reprieve.
Coughs can be very irritating and the major transmitters of disease. Thus, if you have a cough, cover your mouth with your elbow and wear a face mask in public. You do not want someone else to get sick because of you.
