Learning About Your Baby’s Allergies One Diaper at a Time

New parents can have a tough time dealing with their newborn, which often leads to many of them running to the hospital for the smallest of issues when it comes to their baby. But, it is understandable how this can be frustrating. You are now responsible for a child who cannot communicate at all except for occasionally smiling or crying like it is the end of the world.

While as a parent you may develop some psychic ability to know whether your child is hungry, sleepy, being needy, or all of the above, how do you know if your baby has milk allergies?

Well, you are about to find out.

Snoopin’ the Poopin’

One way to look for clues regarding any allergies would be to examine your baby’s poop. Believe it or not, there is a proper color chart explaining whether your newborn is passing out normal stool. It may be an unconventional method, but it effectively identifies a possible allergy. For example, children that are exclusively on breast milk have poop that is seedy and in mustard color while on the other hand, children who are on formula have firm brown or yellow-colored poop.

Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, who is a pediatrician and Chief Medical Officer at SpponfulONE, talked about food sensitivities, mentioning that they are the most common but can only express themselves every now and then.

One of the most common cases happens to be that of cow milk, more specifically, the protein molecules present in dairy products, since it can trigger the immune system. This is also something you might notice through your baby’s poop.

What Are The Signs Of Possible Milk Allergies?

Let’s suppose that your baby does have a milk allergy, the symptoms you will notice are behavioral changes such as abdominal pain which you’ll probably notice through uncontrolled crying, vomiting, rashes, and overall irritability.

These signs should be enough for you to check inside their dirty diaper but if you find:

  1.       Loose stool occurring multiple times a day
  2.       Traces of small amount of blood
  3.       Presence of mucus in the stool

Then you should visit your doctor for a thorough checkup.

Once you get to the doctor, they will prescribe your baby with an elimination diet for the mum if the baby is being breastfed or change of formula, if the baby is on formula milk.
