Calcium: Facts We All Need to Know and Consistently Follow
You must’ve heard that anyone with strong teeth or heavy bone weight is a calcium-rich person. It’s true, yes, but did you know that there’s more to calcium than these two common notions? This nutrient is mandatory for all living things as it’s vital for health and well-being.
99% of the calcium in the human body is constituted by the bones and teeth. But, calcium is also necessary for our brain to actively communicate with our body to enrich muscle movement. Join us as we introduce you to a few interesting facts about the utility and necessity of calcium.
What is calcium and how important is it?
Around 2% of our body weight is made up of the mineral calcium. It’s important for muscle tightening, protein uptake, nerve functioning, and blood-related issues. If the blood pressure drops drastically, a severe bone deficit is possible and that’s why calcium is needed to control blood level.

A few unknown benefits of calcium
While there are plenty of health benefits to this mineral, these three are said to be the most vital:
Cancer prevention
A study conducted some time ago found that nearly 50,000 Norwegian women had lower cancer risk as they’d extensively had milk during their childhood and adulthood. In fact, Cancer Research UK has said that women with a high intake of calcium display a lesser risk of breast cancer. Additionally, as per Korean research, colon cancer chances can be reduced by 16% through calcium intake.
Bones and Teeth
Bone density is built through calcium-rich foods and other vitamins. 90% of bone mass is laid down by the early 20s, and as we age, the mass declines due to hormonal changes, resulting in weaker bones. Researchers have proved that calcium strengthens bones and combines phosphate to make hydroxyapatite to result in stronger bones and teeth.
Heart
Cholesterol levels are highly controlled by the intake of high calcium dairy products that are low in fat. Additionally, this nutrient aids blood pressure positively and controls heart diseases. Moreover, the babies in the womb are said to have a healthy blood level if the mother consumes a good amount of calcium during pregnancy.

Calcium is richly present in dairy products like milk, fresh green leaves, vegetables, fish bones (e.g., sardines and mackerels), supplements, etc. Combining an 800mg dose of calcium supplement with a 10mcg of vitamin D will drastically help your bone mass.
Young boys should necessarily intake 1000mg of calcium every day whereas girls require 800mg. All adults require 700mg of calcium while children can take 350-535mg. Breastfeeding women should make sure they consume 1250mg of calcium daily.
Final thoughts
Now that you know how critical calcium is for your body, we hope you’ll make a conscious effort to include it in your regular diet. But please remember, consulting a doctor before taking calcium supplements is advised to evade any side effects.
