The 2024 Netflix documentary “Hack Your Health” is one example of how this topic has captured wide attention.

Research into gut health took off with the launch of the Human Microbiome Project in 2007. Since then, institutions like Stanford University and King’s College London have dedicated labs studying the gut. Over the past decade, the number of academic papers mentioning “gut” or “gut microbiome” has skyrocketed—from just a few in 2014 to over 130 in 2024.
This kind of growth shows just how much interest the scientific community has in understanding the gut. Still, experts warn that while there’s a lot of promising information, not every claim about gut health is backed by solid evidence.

The increased attention from the public has also brought a flood of commercial interest. From probiotic drinks to cleansing juices, countless products now promise better gut function. But the director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital offers a word of caution: not all these claims are reliable.
In his words, “There’s this idea that if we take a pill or eat the right yogurt, we can shape the perfect gut microbiome. But the truth is—we still don’t have a clear picture of what that perfect version looks like.”
